5 Death Defying Motorcycle Tricks

Ever since Evel Knievel popularized motorcycle stunts in the 1960s and 70s, the tricks have been getting increasingly more daring. The stunts have gone far beyond jumping over buses in an upright position. Stunt riders now do back flips, somersaults, balance on high wires and circle inside a steel ball. Watch these YouTube videos to see the most extreme stunts.

Backflip over Double-Decker Buses
This stunt takes place in London, England, with the London Bridge as a backdrop. Joel Balchin from the motorcycle stunt group The Crusty Demons lands a 75-foot jump, flinging his body off the seat and into the air, holding on by the handlebars. Then he does a backflip over three double-decker buses.
Triple Back Flip
One problem with ramp jumps is that they happen so fast that they must be replayed in slow motion to fully appreciate the stunt. In this short clip, Travis Pastrana does a triple back flip from a ramp. Replay it in slow motion to get the full effect.
Globe of Death
Seven motorcycles buzz round and round inside a steel ball. From a distance, the motorcycles look like bees swarming in a hive, but they have a distinctly choreographed pattern. This stunt must be perfectly timed, or the bikes will collide.
The Motorcycle Somersault
Brazilian stuntman Ronaldo Freitas has a motorcycle equipped with a large hoop over its top. He tips the bike forward, rolling it over and over. Freitas makes the stunt look as easy as a kid doing somersaults, but the hoop is only a few inches wide, and his balance must be flawless.
High Wire
The Nerveless Nocks, a team of stunt performers, does this hire wire stunt as part of their extreme motorcycle act. The motorcycle rides across a high wire in an unusual contraption. A woman stands at the bottom of the contraption, steadying the motorcycle as the rider carefully stands on the seat. Then the woman sways the contraption back and forth, but the rider is not shaken from his seat. For the grand finale, the motorcycle and the contraption spin over and over the high wire.
