WEST NEWBURY — The third annual Muscle Car Show to benefit the Lt. Kenneth Fowler Foundation revs up this year on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Pentucket Regional High School campus. This year’s show runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free to car owners and spectators, with donations to the foundation gratefully accepted. No preregistration is required.

With names like Cyclone, Barracuda, Cobra, Thunderbird and Charger 500, the term “muscle car” typically refers to cars built during the late 1960s and early 1970s that were high on horsepower and torque and low on fuel efficiency and cheesy gadgetry — but all types of vehicles are welcome to enter the car show.

This year’s raffle prize is a complete small block crate motor.

“The engine is the most expensive part of a hot rod — next to the paint job,” said Dan Cena, who organizes the annual show. He noted that “when building a car, the most common engine is a small block, due to the fact that they produce a decent amount of horsepower, fit in just about every car, and are more economical both from a price tag to buy and on gas.”

The winner of the raffle will have a choice between two different engine models from Coastal Customs in Salisbury. The winner’s choice will be delivered to his/her home address. The engine comes fully equipped with an intake, carburetor, distributor, fuel pump, alternator and water pump.

Raffle tickets are $50 each, but only 200 will be sold, and tickets can be purchased only on the day of the car show. The event also features good food, drinks, a DJ and a 50/50 raffle. Rain date is Aug. 14.

The Lt. Kenneth Fowler Foundation raises money to support the community, particularly in the areas of public education and public safety. The 37-year-old Prospect Street resident and lieutenant in the town’s call fire department died unexpectedly in his home in December 2007. Fowler’s passion for all things mechanical was well-known in town.
